An appeals court in Qatar has upheld a lower court ruling that an Egyptian should be deported after being convicted of sending indecent SMSs to a female compatriot. An additional fine of QR3,000 (US$825) was also upheld by the upper court. The man bombarded the woman with suggestive text messages, which included – rather unfortunately for him – one which arrived while the woman was in the police station filing her complaint.

With the assistance of the mobile network, Qtel the police were able to track down the owner of the phone – a 32-year-old man who had arrived in the country in May 2005.The Egyptian claimed that the phone sending the messages had been stolen about a month earlier, but the court decided that his failure to report the theft made this unlikely.
