Bolivian cellco Entel Movil has expanded its mobile network in the rural regions of Santa Cruz as part of its Telefonia Movil Rural (TMR) project, the government’s news agency reports. Two new base stations have been deployed in San Pedro and Chane, with the increased coverage expected to bring services to 6,000 new potential customers. The base station at Chane, approximately 120km from the Bolivian capital, will cover around 3,200 people, whilst the San Pedro installation covers just under 2,800. The company expects that by the end of 2010 it will have signed up approximately 1,000 new subscribers in rural areas under the TMR scheme.

In separate but related news Entel Movil’s parent company, state-owned operator Empresa Nacional de Telecomunicaciones (Entel), has revealed that it is planning to invest at least USD60 million during 2009. At the beginning of January 2009 Entel Movil revealed it had passed the two million subscriber mark, the operator led the market with a share of 42.6% at the end of September 2008.
