Bell Canada said it is offering retirement incentives to 1,500 qualifying union workers in the latest move by Canada’s largest telecom operator to streamline and cut operating costs. Bell Canada is trying to become more competitive in the wake of last month’s failure of a failed offer to acquire its parent, BCE Inc., by an investment group led by the Ontario Teachers Pension Plan board.The retirement incentive offer affects workers represented by the Communications, Energy and Paperworkers’ Union of Canada.
Bell Canada, which has more than 41,000 employees, said the retirement offer is not an early retirement program, since it applies only to workers who meet certain criteria and are already eligible to retire this year and in 2010. It didn’t give details on the incentives.The telecom company said it plans to stagger the dates on which these employees retire, to ensure there is no impact on service to customers.

It seems the stateside BlackBerry faithful will have to wait until the new year to get their hands on the BlackBerry Curve 8900, also known as the BlackBerry Javelin.TmoNews, an unofficial T-Mobile news blog, has confirmed that the anticipated and updated Curve has a “hopeful” release date of Feb. 18. The device is expected to hit T-Mobile first. Already available in Canada and the U.K., the Curve 8900, which got the stamp of approval from the FCC here in November, is being called the high-end BlackBerry Bold 9000’s kid brother.
The quad-band Curve 8900 offers Edge support with built-in Wi-Fi and GPS, a 512MHz next-generation processer, a full QWERTY keyboard and a 2.4-inch, 480 x 360 high-resolution display. The Curve 8900 also marks the thinnest smartphone in BlackBerry’s 10-year history to offer a full QWERTY keyboard, just a hair over a half-inch thick. While the Curve 8900 lacks 3G support, it wraps in a 3.2-megapixel camera and BlackBerry OS version 4.6.

To make the phone more accessible to developers, Google’s Android development team released the first SIM-unlocked and hardware-unlocked version of the T-Mobile G1, which runs on the Android platform.
The move, which the development team quietly let slip on Friday, is a clear signal to application developers that they now have a G1 to test their applications on free from the constraints of signing up for a service contract with T-Mobile USA. The phone, called the Android Dev Phone 1, is available for $399 in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, India, Canada, France, Taiwan, Spain, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Poland and Hungary.
Developers who are registered in the Android Market can sign into their account and purchase the phone. Google is limiting one phone to each developer account. Google warned that non-developers should probably not make use of the phone, noting that, “Since the devices can be configured with system software not provided by or supported by Google or any other company, end users operate these devices at their own risk.”
