Deutsche Telekom has issued a trading statement and says that it saw encouraging developments in its mobile communications markets during last year. The number of customers with the companies in Europe and the United States totaled 128.3 million. This means that the number of customers increased organically by 7.6 million. The contract customer segment accounts for 5 million of this growth with a current customer base of 65.9 million.
T-Mobile Deutschland also defended its leading position in Germany. With over 950,000 new contract customers, the high level of the previous year was reached once again. The successful introduction of the Apple iPhone 3G and the attractive range of calling plans were the main reasons for this development.

T-Mobile International chief technology officer, Joachim Horn, is leaving the company at the end of March.The operator said that horn is looking to ‘pursue a new professional opportunity outside of Germany’. A successor will be announced ‘in the near future’.During his time at T-Mobile, Horn was responsible for implementing large scale network modernisation in the core, radio and service platforms. He is also credited with laying the foundation for mobile broadband at the company by introducing both HSPA and Edge in the European networks.Horn joined T-Mobile in 2003 as technology director for T-Mobile Germany and head of planning and engineering for T-Mobile International. He took on the role of chief technology officer and member of the executive committee in December 2006.

To make the phone more accessible to developers, Google’s Android development team released the first SIM-unlocked and hardware-unlocked version of the T-Mobile G1, which runs on the Android platform.
The move, which the development team quietly let slip on Friday, is a clear signal to application developers that they now have a G1 to test their applications on free from the constraints of signing up for a service contract with T-Mobile USA. The phone, called the Android Dev Phone 1, is available for $399 in the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Japan, India, Canada, France, Taiwan, Spain, Australia, Singapore, Switzerland, Netherlands, Austria, Sweden, Finland, Poland and Hungary.
Developers who are registered in the Android Market can sign into their account and purchase the phone. Google is limiting one phone to each developer account. Google warned that non-developers should probably not make use of the phone, noting that, “Since the devices can be configured with system software not provided by or supported by Google or any other company, end users operate these devices at their own risk.”
