E-Plus and Ericsson partner with the German federal ministry for economics and the ministry for economics, labour and tourism of the German state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to use digital dividend frequencies to provide broadband services to communities without broadband possibilities. The parties signed an agreement at the end of 2008 for a pilot antenna site north west of Waren in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, which will use digital dividend spectrum to provide wireless broadband services. The pilot will use 790-862 MHz frequencies and starts in the beginning of this year. The pilot will run until the end of this year and 50 households and companies within a range of 20 kilometres will be selected to participate. E-Plus will pay the costs and Ericsson will deploy HSDPA equipment to offer download speeds up to 7.2 Mbps. The results of the pilot will be used to make the discussions about the future of the digital dividend more businesslike.
